In San Diego, what is the best school for starting a career in video game development?
Im 25 and don't have much money or good credit, i also work and have a son so if I go to a school I pretty much have 1 shot at it. I am extremely passionate about video games and would love to get my foot in the door. I have been searching for a few years and have heard good and bad things about every school in san diego. If anyone has schools they have attended and are currently working in this career field, any information would be appreciated. perfect reply would include approx cost, course program info, likes and dislikes, and any information to find job leads after school I have seen the websites and read the testimonials but want to hear it straight from the people who are living it. I know there is many jobs with in the gaming industry and I am mainly interested in programming but any info about any position is helpful.

Question about a career in video game development?
I'm debating on whether or not to pursue a career in video games. This is what I'm naturally best at and what I have the most fun doing Thinking visually, coming up with new visual ideas and themes Creating an atmosphere, or universe, and populating it with both visual and story ideas Working with art direction and aesthetics Coming up with really " cool" ideas for characters, races, environments and backstory Tying together everything in the art and lore to form a cohesive whole Shaping the presentation to make the greatest impression on the player Working with people who are passionate about what they do, and inspiring the people who aren'tWhat I'm not so good at Math and programming Lots of restrictions on how much I can actually influence and change DrawingI was never particularly " drawn" to drawing, but I could learn. I could also learn the math and programming as well as anyone else, but I cannot deal with having a very limited influence on the overall design of the game. If, even at the highest level, I am only responsible for a few things in the grand scheme of things, with no chance of getting a job that lets me have more influence over the entire art direction, then I pass.Thoughts? Any comments from actual game designers would be great.
In video game development; What is involved in the programming of the game's concept?
I know the essentials involved in the creation of new maps terrain, materials, modeling, event scripting etc. for existing engines such as Unreal Engine 3. The problem is that, in terms of programming coding, I do not know where to start with creating a custom concept. For example, Unreal Engine has been manipulated by many game design companies to birth their own creations, such as 'APB Reloaded' or 'Batman Arkham Asylum'. While the games use the same engine, they are usually different in concept.By default, The Unreal Development Kit runs the Unreal Tournament game concept you spawn with a gun, and the concept is simply to kill anyone else that has also happened to have found themselves a gun However, I wan't to replace this concept before I even proceed with creating any kind of content.I cannot find any resources that teach you how to create your own concepts as opposed to your own maps for an existing concept. How do I go about acheiving this?I would really appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction for this. Thanks for your time Kyle
Do I still have a chance to get into video game development?
When I was a kid being a game designer was the dream of my life. I realize that the industry isn't how it used to be, and I realize that a game designer does not do all the things that people generally seem to think they do. But, once I hit middle school I thought that I needed to pick something more mature to impress my family and my friends. So up until my first year of college this year I thought I was going to go to medical school and become a doctor. However, after further research and contemplation, I have in mind three possible career paths to pursue. I am pretty good at math, science, and writing, and I was considering either chemical engineering or mechanical engineering, that way I would not have too much difficulty finding a job and supporting a family. However, recently I my former childhood dreaming of working in the video games industry has come back to me like a virus. I keep having ideas that I think would make great games, and I really don't care if I don't make a HUGE amount of money as long as I make enough to live. Now, I do not have a lot of experience programming. I am in the introductory programming computer science class at the University of Washington in Seattle, and I absolutely love it. We're starting out programming with Java, and I am picking up all the concepts pretty well. I have made a few game design documents just during my free time, though they are rather unprofessional and I don't have them anymore. But if I had millions of dollars to live off of, I think THE job I would choose would be to develop video games.I am 19 and I have too many credits in school to go much longer without choosing a major. I wouldn't mind either computer science or one of the engineering disciplines. Anybody with some solid knowledge of the field of videogames, am I too late to get into the industry?

Laws concerning video game development?
I have an idea for a video game, but it's based off an old movie. The original creater of the story has been dead for many years, but I'm sure someone else owns the rights. My question is, can I freely use the movie or the book and change the story line in the game however I want without any penalties? Or would I have to get some kind of permission?for ex. American Mgee's Alice is based off Alice in wonderland, but he changed some things...did he have to get any kind of permission for his video game? or was he free to do whatever he wanted? Crosseyed, thank you soooo much You told me exactly what I needed to know The movie I'm thinking of is part of public domain
